Industry in the region is experiencing a gradual upturn in its development.

The region has no fuel or energy resources and therefore relies mainly on imported raw materials; more than 70% of the purchased electric power is used to ensure normal operation of the production complex.

Unlike most of the other regions of the Central economic district, there is no marked concentration of industrial facilities in the regional center of Vladimir Region.

Organ, Schiffelbein a 60-year institution at church

She said she takes her work seriously and picks out hymns that tie in with the liturgy and Scripture readings for a particular Mass.

Schiffelbein has lost track of how many years she has played the organ at Sacred Heart but said it was more than 60.

"I started when I was in grade school," she said after a recent Saturday evening Mass. "My piano teacher switched me over to the organ."

Soon, Schiffelbein was playing the organ at every morning Mass. She later became a fixture, playing at weddings, funerals and other services.

Schiffelbein is the youngest of 14 children born to Adam and Catherine Puhl. She said her father always prayed that one of his children would play the organ in church.

Sadly, Schiffelbein said, he died before she began to play.

University Requires Emergency Texting

The school is the first in the nation to mandate that students sign up for text message alerts, WCVB-TV in Boston reported.

If students don't sign up, they can't register for spring classes.

This weekend, the school sent out test alerts to about 40,000 students.

There were glitches in the system, but the goal is to reach as many students as possible, as fast as possible, to improve response time to a crisis. .

Peach Buzz

The main differences: the new Fado is a bit roomier and there's a bit more head room, thanks to elevated ceilings.

But perhaps the best added feature at the new location?

A rooftop patio for 75 patrons, complete with a polished granite bar, decorative planter boxes and one killer view of the massive Buckhead retail renovation currently under way.

McGill says the pub's menu faves like corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips and famous boxtys are staying put as are those popular early AM televised soccer and rugby matches that are heavily attended by British ex pats and their American friends.

Alas, the inconvenient hour of the game telecasts here (the matches are played in the PM across the pond) is something McGill says won't change either,

Quipped McGill: "The vagaries of time travel forces us to show them at that hour here."

If city permits are issued in a timely fashion, the new Fado should be open in time for St.

Small Goals Lead To Big Fitness Gains

Many people want to make changes in their bodies or fitness levels. They want to lose 15 pounds by spring, run a 5K or lower their blood pressure.

Those can be reachable challenges, but the key to getting there, experts say, is having smaller goals in between to ensure success from point A to point B.

Montana musher wins Beargrease

DULUTH, Minn., Jan. 30 A Montana musher Wednesday won the 400-mile John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon across northeastern Minnesota in wind chills plunging to 40 degrees below zero.
Jason Barron, 36, of Lincoln, Mont., and his 11 dogs finished the course from Duluth, up the North Shore of Lake Superior to near the Canadian border and back in 34 hours, 43 minutes and 26 seconds, the Duluth News Tribune reported. Their effort won Barron $8,000.
Barron, his beard covered in ice, told the newspaper the trail "was tough." It was his first time in the Beargrease sled dog race. Last year, he finished eighth in Alaska's grueling Iditarod, an event once won by his father.
"My team is so tired. The hills finally took their toll on the last run," he said.
Second place went to John Stetson of Duluth in a time of 35:18:04.

Friday Look Ahead: What's happening in Vegas?

But at some point Saturday I suspect I'll start wishing I was at The Orleans and attending the Las Vegas Invitational, just like last year when I saw Kansas beat Florida in an overtime thriller.

This season, it's North Carolina vs. Louisville for the championship Saturday night (assuming there is no stupid upset Friday night). The game will be played in an arena connected to the casino, a bonus for fans because there's just something cool about leaving your room, walking downstairs, eating dinner, grabbing a drink, playing blackjack for two hours, placing a bet on your team of choice in the sports book and then moseying on over to watch yourself win or lose money on a game featuring two Hall of Fame coaches that is unfolding right before your eyes, all while never having to so much as go outside.

Brazil Amazon Deforestation Soars

The Brazilian government has announced a huge rise in the rate of Amazon deforestation, months after celebrating its success in achieving a reduction.

In the last five months of 2007, 3,235 sq km (1,250 sq miles) were lost.

Gilberto Camara, of INPE, an institute that provides satellite imaging of the area, said the rate of loss was unprecedented for the time of year.

Officials say rising commodity prices are encouraging farmers to clear more land to plant crops such as soya.

The monthly rate of deforestation saw a big rise from 243 sq km (94 sq miles) in August to 948 sq km (366 sq miles) in December.

"We've never before detected such a high deforestation rate at this time of year," Mr Camara said.

His concern, outlined during a news conference in Brasilia on Wednesday, was echoed by Environment Minister Marina Silva.
