Howard the possum stirs up a lot of human feelings
Readers of the ongoing saga of Howard the possum in Gardening Fool columns have responded with several heartfelt stories of their own. Others have written to reiterate that it is we humans who have overrun wildlife's territory, not the other way around, so we should learn to live together peacefully. To date, no new feedback involving firearms or recipes for possum stew have arrived on my desk. At least one reader has warned that possum attacks on my garden chickens are inevitable. When that happens, he writes, I won't be such a bleeding heart for Howard and his relatives. As it turns out, however, more than a few of you have a soft spot for the wild things. Mariana Greene .
The past is over and Obama is the future
You have to take care of them, educate them, have health care and some kind of job opportunity for them once they are here. That’s where the Democrats come in. It was a slippery slope that some couldn’t control. They may have lost a job or been laid off. They may have been kicked out of their homes, for one reason or another, and had no money to move somewhere else.
Royal Ballet: Primeval power retains its grip
For all the splayed hands, bent legs and weighty jumps on the beat, MacMillan's patterns are intricate. He uses the great mass of dancers to ebb and flow, varying the movement for women and men, propelling the action so that it unfolds into a convincing ritual, an "adoration of the earth" that gives way to a sacrifice under a golden sun (which also looks like the Tree of Knowledge and a nuclear cloud). As the chosen maiden, Tamara Rojo freights each step with meaning, fists railing against her fate. Her grave eyes shine through her mask-like make-up, conveying fear and pride in equal measure; her terrified exhalations of breath, her rapid runs around the stage, the very way she pounds her feet and raises her arms, all reveal the weight of what has befallen her, as the swaying, stamping crowd raises her aloft like a petrified animal.
