| Mothers Given Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation Give Birth To ...
When mothers are given multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMN,) they tend to give birth to children who are bigger and heavier. This is contrast to mothers given just iron and folic acid supplementation (IFA). The effect continues into the first three years of the children's lives, according to an article in the February 8 issue of The Lancet, which follows up the Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition. While it is already known that low birthweight affects child morbidity and survival rates in developing countries, it is not always clear what effect interventions to increase birthweight can have on child health. Dr David Osrin, UCL Centre for International Health and Development, Institute of Child Health, London, UK and colleagues from Mother and Infant Research Activities, Kathmandu, Nepal, has previously investigated this issue through a randomized controlled trial in Nepal comparing 1,200 women given either IFA (a control) or MMN, a supplement with the recommended daily value of 15 vitamins and minerals, during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
Keep Unborn Baby Healthy: Dos and Don'ts
Although there is no way to guarantee that your baby will be born 100 percent healthy, expecting mothers can take certain steps to reduce the risk of some physical and intellectual abnormalities. The National Women's Health Information Center and AVSC International, an organization that promotes reproductive health care worldwide, give some tips for pregnant women: Visit a health-care provider in the first trimester of your pregnancy, and then at regular intervals until you give birth. Contact your insurance provider or, if you don't have one, contact your local family or social services for health insurance options. Eat healthy foods. Your doctor may instruct you with some specific nutrition guidelines. Get regular physical activity.
Real Life Fitness
We have explored the notion of not having time for exercise and how to think differently about your fitness, to make it a higher priority and find time to fit it into your timetable. We have also talked a lot about options, being flexible and making sure that when you look at your schedule and see you have got a really busy week coming up, you can still clearly see where you can fit in your activity and healthy eating plans, even if it is not your complete or ideal fitness routine. Ensuring that you take active steps towards your goals at all times will keep you on track physically and will also reassure you mentally that you are never slipping backwards. A week without exercise or even a few days of food choices that do not work so well for you can play havoc with your mind and make getting started again more difficult than it needs to be.
DHS faces scrutiny over care
Children's Rights, however, contends the failure of DHS to protect children in its care has been well-documented for more than 10 years and the agency has neglected to fix the problems. In two of the last five years, Oklahoma had the worst rate in the nation of children being abused while in foster care, the lawsuit states. "This includes physical abuse, sexual abuse or extreme neglect inflicted on foster children by foster parents or staff at shelters or other facilities," the lawsuit said. Oklahoma also has a bad record of splitting up siblings in foster homes and psychologically damaging children by bouncing them around from one foster home or shelter to another, the lawsuit states. "Recent state data shows that 34 percent of foster children in Oklahoma had experienced four or more placements and 17 percent — approximately 1,700 children — had experienced six or more placements while in DHS custody," the lawsuit said.

Animal activist convicted in Pa. stolen dog case gets probation
HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. - An animal activist convicted of stealing a dog from a Blair County couple was sentenced to a year's probation and 300 hours of community service. A judge on Friday also ordered 43-year-old Tammy Grimes to pay court costs and to stop profiting from the sale of merchandise featuring images of the dog. A jury in December convicted the Tyrone woman of theft and receiving stolen property. Grimes had said she took 19-year-old Jake in September 2006 after the animal had been chained outside for three days without food and water. The dog was moved to a foster home and later died. The former owners say they never mistreated the dog. .
MTV Does Another NYE in NYC
MTV rang in the New Year with another star-studded party in their studio overlooking Times Square. Not only did the revelers have a prime spot to view the ball drop, but they were treated to performances by Kid Rock (with Rev Run), Mary J. Blige, Good Charlotte and more. I guess that means Joel didn't get to start the new year with a kiss from Nicole, but I'm sure he'll make up for it back in LA. Cutie VJ Damien Fahey looked dapper in his three piece suit for the big night. The hostess of the party was Tila Tequila, who took the opportunity to announce that her first shot at love didn't work out and she's doing another season of her reality dating show. Who's excited? To see more from the party including Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Kid, Rev Run, Damien, Joel and others just read more .
