| Study Links Daily Fast-Food Consumption, No Exercise to Liver Damage
The findings, published in the journal Gut, are based on 18 slim, healthy people (12 men and six women) who took a "fast food challenge" for four weeks, and a comparison group, matched for age and sex, who ate a normal diet. The fast good group restricted their levels of physical activity to not more than 5,000 daily steps and ate at least two fast food meals every day. Participants consumed a hamburger, fries and a soda at most fast food meals. The aim was to double caloric intake and increase total body weight by between 10 percent and 15 percent to see if these had any impact on their liver health, it was reported. Blood samples were taken before the challenge began and then at regular intervals throughout the study period, to check on their liver enzyme and fat levels.
Is Obama Really the Liberal Reagan?
Now, you may not buy any of this, especially given Obama's rating as the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate. My friend Larry Kudlow sure doesn't seem to. As he wrote yesterday over at the Corner on the National Review website: The Wall Street Journal's Steve Moore says Obama's tax plan would add up to a 39.6 percent personal income tax, a 52.2 percent combined income and payroll tax, a 28 percent capital-gains tax, a 39.6 percent dividends tax, and a 55 percent estate tax. In other words, Sen. Obama is a very-high-tax candidate.... Interestingly, at least two of Obama's top economic advisors—Austan Goolsbee and Jeffrey Liebman—are highly regarded free-market economists.... But somehow their candidate has a very punitive high-tax campaign plan for the economy. I would say a few things in response: 1) Yes, Obama is for raising income-tax rates on wealthier Americans.
Bobby Jindal Sworn in as Louisiana Governor
BATON ROUGE, La. Bobby Jindal, the 36-year-old son of Indian immigrants, was sworn in Monday as Louisiana's 55th governor and immediately moved to make good on a campaign promise, saying he will call a February special legislative session on ethics to help cleanse the hurricane-battered state's corrupt image. Louisiana's first nonwhite governor since Reconstruction, the nation's first elected Indian-American governor and the nation's youngest sitting governor, Jindal pledged to overcome the stereotype of the state as a haven for cronyism and self-serving politicians. "We have the opportunity -- born of tragedy but embraced still the same -- to make right decades of failure in government," Jindal said, referencing hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which hit the state in 2005.
This year, the American people will choose between two diametrically ...
The Democratic Party looks at our nation and sees the twilight of the American soul. Republicans affirm that now, as throughout history, the spiritual and intellectual genius of the American people will create a better nation and maintain a just peace. To Republicans, creativity and growth are imperatives for a new era of opportunity for all. The Republican Party's vision of America's future, the heart of our 1984 Platform, begins with a basic premise: From freedom comes opportunity; from opportunity comes growth; from growth comes progress. This is not some abstract formula. It is the vibrant, beating heart of the American experience. No matter how complex our problems, no matter how difficult our tasks, it is freedom that inspires and guides the American Dream.
Sell is back with eyes on Beijing
On Jan. 27, Sell set a course record, winning the ING Miami Half Marathon in 1:03:46. For Sell, the race brought a nice change of pace from his usual training regimen in Rochester Hills. "We haven't had a day over 35 degrees since Christmas, and the other day when we did some speed work it was 7 degrees," he said this week. Wednesday, "we got about four inches of freezing sleet. It took me an hour to shovel the pure slush off of my driveway — we're getting hammered up here." It's the Hansons-Brooks team that keeps Sell in the frozen north. "I've been with the team around seven years, and there's no magic formula. ... It's just getting a dozen guys together that were all No. 1 in college, and they all push each other. We're a bunch of bullheaded guys that don't want to lose.
The Vegetarian Who Won't Eat Vegetables?
Our resident natural nutritionist Vardit Kohn offers some cunning tips. Raisingkids member's problem My daughter is nearly 14 and has been a 'vegetarian' for about three years. The problem is that she does not eat vegetables! I try to give them to her but she makes excuses like she is full or not hungry and I can tell that she doesn't like them. Her diet is made up of quorn, fish, cheese, pasta and junk food (crisps and chocolate). She also refuses rice. She will not eat breakfast and seems to have no interest in food, forgetting to eat. I don't understand what is going wrong! She didn't have any problems with food as a small child. She doesn't appear underweight but claims that 'food is boring'. She doesn't show the symptoms of anorexia or bulimia but is simply disinterested in eating.
