Tips for cutting back on sodium

To cut down on the amount of sodium in your diet:

Eat out less often. Choose restaurants where food is cooked to order and ask questions about or make requests for food preparation. Ask for proteins grilled without marinades or added salt; oil and vinegar on the side in place of prepared salad dressings; skip the soy or dipping sauce that arrives with sushi. Add more foods containing potassium to daily eating. Potassium-rich foods also help to blunt the effects of salt on blood pressure. Good sources of potassium are dried fruits; strawberries, bananas, cantaloupe and oranges; beets, greens and tomatoes; dried beans; turkey, fish and beef. In the meat department, read labels to determine if fresh meat or poultry has been salted, marinated or injected with a salty solution. Look for canned vegetables packed without salt, or rinse and drain canned vegetables and beans to reduce sodium content before cooking.

North State Voices: Are potato chips part of a healthy diet?

I can't say I was eager to reform my eating habits. I don't even know how vegans survive — no butter, no cheese, no eggs? Impossible.

I thought maybe I could be a vegetarian. But I can tell you in one word why I resist: bacon. Also, pot roast, coq au vin and BBQ ribs. But I did get the message. I started relying less on meat and more on vegetables.

Recently, Michael Pollan has further enlightened me. His "Omnivore's Dilemma" (2006) describes the "natural history" of four meals. It's his contention that we are hurting ourselves and the environment by eating industrial food. Cattle, he argues, are not meant to eat grain, and thus are unhealthy and require hormones .

SNP threatens to tax supermarkets in war on booze culture

Retail organisations voiced opposition to the new proposals, which follow complaints from publicans that they were being unfairly singled out.John Drummond, the chief executive of the Scottish Grocers Federation, said the plans were "fundamentally flawed"."This should only be applied if it can be specifically proven that any individual shopkeeper or publican is seen to be responsible for causing anti-social behaviour or the like," he said. "We already have ways of dealing with anti-social behaviour, we have structures in place. The police ought to be doing that."Mr Drummond described the levy as "another tax" that could threaten the livelihoods of small shopkeepers already facing a doubling in their licence fees under a separate Holyrood shake-up of the licensing system. A spokesman for the Association of Convenience Stores said: "We would be concerned about the impact of any blanket levy.

Flick's closing store

Competition to the north and the south has led longtime Northern Kentucky grocer Flick's Food to close its Hebron location in the Flick-built Tanners Station shopping center, which opened in 2004.

The store on North Bend Road will close by the end of this month, a company official said Monday.

"We are closing just the one for now," co-owner Dave Flick said. "We are not sure what we're going to do with the other."

I’m Just Sayin’: Are you a social drinker?

We have our share of teetotalers, alcoholics and everything in between that relates to using alcohol here in Southwest Florida.

A survey about alcohol usage probably would show that 99 percent of people who drink are merely “social drinkers." One percent would have no opinion or could not remember.

While chatting with friends about how we all probably drink more or at least more often than our parents and grandparents did, I wondered what being a “social drinker" means.

Most people probably would say a social drinker is anyone who drinks about the same amount he or she does.

It's like asking what being “middle aged" means. I think of middle age as about 10 years older than I am, although that definition increasingly strains credulity.

Back to drinking — Let's face it.

Clinton and Obama take poll fight to the finish

Hillary Clinton was holding on early today in the face of a surge by Barack Obama in the Super Tuesday elections, one of the biggest and most competitive contests in US history.

Obama and Clinton were slogging it out for the Democratic nomination, matching each other with victories in the early states.

Both Republicans and Democrats were fighting it out coast-to-coast in 22 states for the right to represent their parties in the White House race in November.

In the Republican race, John McCain, the Arizona senator, established himself as the clear front-runner. He was projected to take several key early states.

For the Democrats, Obama made early gains, building on the momentum that has seen him eat into the 10- to 20-point poll lead Clinton had enjoyed only a few weeks earlier.

A Neolib New Deal?:

In practice, this monolithic, insidious commercial motive translates into simply playing good music. ... The song you hear on the radio, in contrast is likely to be something some record company promoter has bugged (or bribed) the station to play. It will probably be an artist with current commercial potential--not a one-hit wonder, or singer who's died or quit the business, but an "act" of non-trivial potential future earning power. ... Or it will be someone who knows someone who knows the DJ. ... And it likely won't be a two-year-old song of proven appeal, but an iffy new song from whatever CD is about to come out. (Let's give this struggling new singer-songwriter a break!) Or it will be an older song from a band that's appearing in town that week. (Perhaps the station happens to have tickets to give away!) ...
