Station Gives Away Valentine's Divorce

A Charleston radio station is observing Valentine's Day with a reminder that Cupid sometimes misses his mark.

WKLC-FM, better known as Rock 105, is giving away a free divorce.

Valentine's Day isn't all hearts and flowers, said WKLC Program Director Jay Nunley. There is a darker side, he said, "where maybe you despise your spouse and resent the entire day." .

FROM THE EDITOR: Dartmouth's regular blogger is the ultimate homer

While the selectmen did approve ballot questions that voters will get to decide April 1, they decided not to give voters the chance to decide on spending nearly $60,000 to reopen the North Dartmouth library branch. As soon as Curt reported that news, a reader responded, "That's a crying shame."

And the conversation hasn't slowed much since. When Curt, who was born and raised in New Bedford and later moved with his family (he has a wife and two grown children) to Portsmouth, R.I., gets home in the evening, he immediately goes to his place on the Dartmouth page of our Web site and usually finds seven or eight comments that have been sent to him for posting on his blog.

The news business has come a long way since people like Curt Brown and I started, and the Internet has once again made newspapers the most immediate source of breaking news because they have the largest and by far the most skilled news staffs, people who know the communities we cover very well.

LAST night after her uncontested "victory" in Florida, Hillary Clinton was introduced by... Alcee Hastings, removed from by the Senate in 1998 after impeachment from* in the House, under a heavy cloud of suspicion of bribery when he was a federal judge. (A bit of the colourful background here.) Bill Clinton pardoned Mr Hastings' alleged co-conspirator on his last day in office.

Doesn't Ms Clinton have any slightly less dodgy-looking Floridian backers? Or if slightly suspect they must be, ones whose former associates had not been pardoned from federal prison by her husband?

Setting limits for caffeine, cholesterol, sodium, sugar

Dear F.S.: I take it you've managed to get 84 years under your belt without any great health problem. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it. However, since you asked, I'll answer.

Caffeine: two to four cups of coffee a day are acceptable.

The Real Subprime Crisis and Elusive Predatory Lender

We're at the early stages of a subprime crisis. The number of people getting kicked out of their homes for missing loan payments is rising. Since home ownership is every politician's favorite talking point, it's no wonder that we're seeing presidential hopefuls like Senator Clinton taking the evil eye off of oil companies, and pointing fingers at the subprime loan business.

As the real estate mess should be peaking right before the next presidential election, expect the subject to increasingly dominate the news and talking points.

"Something must be done to ensure honest hardworking Americans don't get kicked out of their homes," they say. Some of the policies proposed to "fix" the system will do exactly the opposite of the intended result: they will hurt lower income Americans by restricting access to home loans.

about this blog

Since their apparent litmus test for candidates is to be against the wind farm, how can the poor girl lose. If the Editorial Board needs ideas for their endorsement, they can use the rationale of the Boston Herald which endorsed MS Healey today:

Times' dichotomy between staff and editors Newspapers report historic drop in circulation

Like their senior sibling, The Wall Street Journal which is also owned by the Dow Jones Co., the Cape Cod Times has is a deep division between the news reporters and the editorial board responsible for the newspaper's editorials.

Most of the former are young and as liberal as most youths, while the editorial page is controlled by older conservatives who reflect the views of Dow Jones and WSJ.

This is obvious in reading most edition where the news stories tend to be direct and fair, while the editorial board is as biased as any newspaper in America.

Tattle: Too hot for tunnel vision

IT'S ONE THING when a new Calvin Klein underwear ad in Times Square gets the decency folks riled up, but the London subway system has a bigger problem than Klein, Abercrombie or Victoria's Secret.

Lucas Cranach the Elder.

London's transport authority has refused to display a poster featuring Cranach's "Venus," saying it is overtly sexual.

"Venus" was painted in 1532.

But she's still hot. In London, it seems, 470 is the new 30.

The painting, which depicts a golden-haired, milky-skinned woman cocking her hips behind a transparent veil, is one of 70 works due to go on display at London's Royal Academy of Arts on March 8.

But Transport for London refused to display a poster of the work unless the bottom half was cropped out, the academy said.

Cranach, after all, was the Seymour Butts of his time.
